Alfreton Town are very pleased to announce the capture of young defender Matthew Carson on an initial one month loan spell from EFL side Grimsby Town subject to FA Approval

Carson, 22, primarily plays as a left back. He spent his formative years in the Liverpool academy having been born and raised in Chester. At age 14 after being released by the Reds Carson joined the Burnley academy. Despite never making a first team appearance for the Clarets Carson gained valuable experience from loan spells in the North West Counties League with Padiham and Nelson.
After being released by Burnley in 2021 Carson was signed by Accrington Stanley. While Carson never played for the Stanley first team he turned in a number of appearances for the Under 23s and gained further valuable experience out on loan.
He joined Carrick Rangers in the Northern Irish Premiership in 2022 in the first such loan spell where he scored an impressive 4 goals in 14 games for the Amber Army.
Carson then experienced the National League North for the first time in a 1 month loan spell at AFC Telford United during the 2022/23 season where he found the net for the Bucks away at Spennymoor Town in August 2022 with a terrific dead ball freekick from outside the area.
More goals and experience was gained by Carson at Stalybridge Celtic in the Northern Premier League Division One West.
Carson was released by Stanley at the end of the season however and signed a short term contract at EFL Championship side Reading ahead of the 2023/24 season after a successful trial period at the club. While there was well documented financial issues at the Royals, Carson worked hard and played 10 games in the League One for the Berkshire side as well as several more appearances for the development side.
Most recently Carson signed for EFL League Two side Grimsby Town where has made a number of appearances for the Mariners first time putting in noteworthy performances during his time at the club.
