PREVIEW | Alfreton Town v Worthing Emirates FA Cup First Round

Towerzey Lisa2 Nov 2023 - 20:26

Reds aim to down the Rebels in FA Cup

Alfreton Town host Worthing FC in a hugely anticipated and mouth watering clash in the Emirates FA Cup First Round Proper on Saturday.

Its the first time in five years Alfreton have got this far in the competition. Wins over Cleethorpes Town away and home successes over Emley AFC followed by a thrilling win over Macclesfield FC in the previous round have set up the tie.

The Reds head into the game in the better form of the two sides. Billy Heath`s side have suffered just one defeat in 10 this season at their humble Impact Arena home a 3-2 defeat against bottom of the table Darlington back in August. There recent form over the last six league matches sees only Chester take more points than Alfreton`s 13. The 3-0 reverse at Gloucester was the only defeat in the last 11 outings for the Reds.

On the other hand our opponents Worthing FC are out of form. They lie 21st in the form guide over their last 6 matches and have conceded 13 goals during that time. They did however beat Bath City 2-0 away from home in their last outing for their first win in six to move up to eight just a point out of the play offs in the National League South.

Worthing havent reached the proper rounds of the FA Cup for 24 years and have beaten Eastbourne Borough, Whitehawk and Bath City in the last round to get this far for only the fifth time in their history.

The victors will pocket prize money worth a huge 41k and a coveted place in the second Round Proper for only the third time in our history and only the second occasion for the Rebels.

The fixture will be officiated by National League referee Paul Marsden who has taken charge of the Reds once before. A 3-0 National League North home defeat to Darlington in April 2017.

In a quirk on both previous occasions Alfreton have advanced through to the second Round Proper in 9 previous attempts it has been via a 4-2 scoreline.
