Reds claim share of spoils with Full Time Iron

In front of a season high crowd of 3,545 and roared on throughout by a passionate and supportive away contingent Alfreton emerged from their visit to Scunthorpe United on Saturday with a well earned share of the spoils following a goalless draw at the Attis Arena.

Billy Heath made two changes from the midweek National League North defeat at home to South Shields with Dwayne Wiley and Billy Fewster back in the side in place of Adam Anson and Billy Whitehouse.

Alfreton made their intentions clear right from the start as Fewster won the first corner of the contest in just the second minute. Fewster who had been out of action in recent matches was impressive on his return to the fold and it was him who took to the corner towards Adam Lund who saw his ferocious goal bound shot bravely cleared by home defender Andrew Boyce.

The Reds made the better start as they won a series of set pieces and long throws which were a constant throughout the 90 minutes.
The Iron maybe had their best opening of the match before the quarter hour was up as Will Evans scorer of the winner for Scunthorpe in the corresponding fixture last season, lifted the ball to Harris to volley the ball goalwards but Willis was alert in the Alfreton goal to grab the ball.

While the match was keenly contested by both teams it was far from a classic with real chances at the premium all afternoon

However it was Alfreton that looked the more likely of the two teams to find a breakthrough much to the growing frustration of the home support.

Tyler Denton then saw a well struck shot saved by Willis who got his whole body behind the effort on 20 minutes.

Space was hard earned in attacking areas but Jake Day strode clear just before the break and let fly before his shot was deflected behind for a corner.

There was a stop start beginning to the second half following a number of stoppages in play for players to be given medical attention for a few knocks.

Danny Whitehall fired a free kick on the edge of the box off target on 52 minutes for the home side and Reds captain Dwayne Wiley headed well off target on 64 minutes but the two teams remained locked at 0-0 as we entered the final quarter of the clash.

Once again though it was Billy Heath`s side carrying the most threat as Jake Day dragged a shot wide on 75 minutes.

The best chance of the match for Alfreton to grab all three points arrived on 89 minutes as substitute David Moyo did really well to lay the ball off perfectly in to the path of the onrushing Billy Fewster who cut inside on the edge of the area before passing to Lewis Salmon who in turn forced an excellent reaction save from Ross Fitzsimons in the Scunthorpe goal.

Alfreton held firm for the seven minutes of stoppage time to grab a well earned draw and are back in action on Tuesday Night at the Impact Arena in the Derbyshire Senior Cup Third Round at home to Staveley Miners Welfare.
