Hard graft and determined Reds display rewarded with berth in First Round Proper

Ofton secure a place in the FA Cup first round for the 12th time.

Superb Waldock volley secures Alfreton succession into the FA cup first round with 1-0 victory in a fiery encounter against Spennymoor.

Alfreton won a challenging battle with a fellow National League North outfit that went right down to the wire.

The deciding goal, however, was scored in the 74th minute by Liam Waldock, who struck a volley first-time from the edge of the box into the bottom left corner.

The First chance would fall for the Reds as Billy Fewster found Billy Whitehouse on the edge of the area whose deflected effort came off the post and ended in the hands of Brad James.

Spennymoor did not go without their chances however, as they had a goal through captain Glen Taylor from the edge of the box that was disallowed for offside after the assistant referee raised his flag as he judged Rob Ramshaw had impeded George Willis from an offside position.

Towards the end of the first half, Josh Clackstone intercepted a cross and cushioned the ball back to Willis, who after some hesitation picked up the ball gifting The Moors an indirect free kick from the edge of the 6-yard area.

A sea of red would charge down the indirect free kick and block the effort as the visitors felt they should have had a penalty after Issac Fletcher went down in the aftermath, but the officials paid it no mind.

The second half kicked off with two incredible Spennymoor chances, both of which Willis was able to keep out.

One of the chances in particular left the visitors feeling hard done by as Willis blocked Dan Rowe’s shot which prompted appeals from Spennymoor that the ball had crossed the line but the game went on at 0-0.

Alfreton weathered the storm figuratively and literally as the sun came back out to shine down on a 15-minute period of dominance for the home side, building up to Waldock's goal.

The decisive moment came as Jed Abbey’s deflected effort fell to Waldock who had an outstanding game up to that point, and he guided his effort into the bottom left corner with a touch of class that stunned the Impact Arena.

The final 20 minutes were very Spennymoor heavy as you would expect but Alfreton did well to prevent the visitors from creating any clear-cut opportunities, only allowing half chances.

Alfreton will be in the hat for the first round proper for the second consecutive year.

The first-round draw will take place at the University of Bradford Stadium on Monday the 14th of October and will be broadcast from 7 pm on BBC Two.

The Reds are back in league action next as they take on second-place Chorley at the impact on the 19th of October.
