Wonderful Waldock the Reds Hero again as Alfreton leave it late for huge win over Magpies

A lovely warm October afternoon at the Impact Arena saw Alfreton beat promotion rivals Chorley in National League North in a cagey encounter which extended the unbeaten run to 14 matches since opening day defeat at Southport.

The Reds made a good start to the game, putting pressure on the visitors and scoring with five minutes elapsed, only for the referee to rule it out for a foul by Max Hunt on the Magpies defender.

Whitehouse soon after managed to get to the ball before the goalkeeper after latching on to a George Willis goalkick, but the angle was too tight for a shot so he clipped it into the middle, but no one was there to capitalise much to the relief of Chorley. Alfreton started the game fantastically.

The hosts kept up their good pressure for a lot of the first half, but the away side reminded Ofton that they had an attacking threat of their own. Some good build up on the right lead to a nice ball in, but the linesman raised his flag for offside.

There was a golden chance for Alfreton on 25 minutes as Liam Waldock benefited after charging down a clearance from Mark Ellis which put the Reds number 10 clean through on goal, but he put his shot wide and Chorley escaped.

The long throw was once again effective for the Reds, but Chorley defended well to their credit as many expected the game was tight and tense with little to separate the teams.

Shortly after the second half started, there was an extended stoppage in play for Wiley, who went down with a nasty head injury.

The intensity wasn’t as high at the beginning of the second half but Alfreton were still pushing for a breakthrough. Fewster and Whitehouse were looking lively on the wing and Jake Day was holding it up well, but no clear cut chances

As the half wore on, Chorley began to grow into the game. A couple of times they got into good positions on the left hand side but could not find the end product. There were some warning signs for the Reds. With 15 minutes to play Caveley found Mark Ellis who fired wide of the target before minutes later Caveley himself missed the target from long distance with Willis caught out

Jake Day was substituted in an effort to bring some fresh legs onto the pitch, he was replaced by Moyo.

The game continued to be scrappy and hard fought and keenly contested as we approached the final 10 minutes

With just under 5 minutes to go however, Alfreton found the elusive breakthrough much to the delight of the majority of the 558 inside the Impact Arena as Waldock was the Reds hero for the second successive week as he slotted the ball away beautifully past Urwin to give the hosts a deserved lead.

The referee added 8 minutes onto the end of the game, and the visitors pushed but the home side held firm to take three massive points and extended the unbeaten home run to 23 matches .

Attendance: 558
