Alfreton Town return to league action tonight when they make the trip South to take on Peterborough Sports on Match Day 14 in National League North.
In the last outing the Reds had a night sure to live in the memories of supporters for many years to come as they made the short journey to take on one of the oldest football clubs in the world in Notts County.
It was the first competitive meeting between the clubs and roared on by the raucous noise of the biggest away following in the clubs history, 1326 fannatcal supporters Alfreton made the perfect start and took a shock lead when Liam Waldock grabbed his third goal in his last three FA Cup games to take his season tally to five.
However Alfreton`s lead only lasted a matter of seconds before a speculative shot from distance from the Magpies wrong footed Reds keeper George Willis and brought the hosts level.
Alfreton never let their heads drop to their absolute credit throughout the whole night and were arguably the better side in the first 45.
Minutes in to the second half there was a big call for the referee as Adam Lund looked to have pulled back by a Notts defender who had already been booked but the match official failed to sports this.
Minutes later Notts County top scorer Gambian striker Allasana jatta grabbed his first of the game to hand the hosts the advantage after converting a Jevani Brown delivery. Jatta grabbed his second to complete his brace while man of the match Brown got a late double of his own leaving a very harsh look to the scoreline as Notts ran out 5-1 victors.
Ever Alfreton player could be proud of their efforts however on a big night for the club,
With the FA Cup adventure over for another season Alfreton will be keen to start another run and climb the table.
Inactivity over recent days has seen the reds slip out of the play off places to 8th place in the league table but should the Reds win both of their games in hand they would go level top of the division so it is clearly still very tight at this stage of the season. Alfreton also have the advantage of an extra days rest over their opponents Peterborough Sports who lost 2-1 at Leamington in the league on Saturday afternoon.
Tonight's game will be the fifth meeting between the clubs and with the Reds and the Turbines yet to face off on a Saturday!
Ofton are unbeaten in the four previous games with Sports with two wins and two draws.
In the corresponding fixture last season Liam Waldock came up with an equalizer late on to salvage a point in a howling gale in front of the lowest gate of Alfreton`s season of 195.
This term has been something of a struggle so far for Peterborough Sports as player manager Michael Gash sees his squad just one place and three points outside the relegation places with 14 points from 14 games played. Sports have only one win in their last seven games in all comps and came agonisingly close to qualifying for the First Round of the Fa Cup for the first time losing to Rushall Olympic on penalty kicks.
The referee for tonight's fixture is David Jones who was the man in the middle for our 2-2 draw with Chester at the Impact Arena this season and a 2-2draw away at Saturday`s opponents Warrington Town last season.
