Match Preview: Alfreton Town vs Southport

Jacob Hackett19 Aug 2022 - 17:08

Reds host Southport on Saturday

Alfreton Town face Southport at home on Saturday afternoon for their fourth installment of the 2022/23 Vanarama National League North campaign.

Billy Heath’s side remain undefeated, yet frustrated, after shares were spoiled in each of their first three fixtures against Chester, Farsley Celtic and Spennymoor Town.

The Reds played 70 minutes with ten men in their last outing away to Spennymoor due to captain Conor Branson being sent off in controversial fashion. A fantastic, though forced, defensive performance ensured that their unbeaten run continued on Tuesday night. However, an undoubted sense of vexation is certainly brewing, spurred on by thoughts of what the result might have been at the Brewery Field should Branson have stayed on the pitch.

Alfreton will be hopeful of capitalising on their frustration this weekend when Southport visit the Impact Arena.

The Sandgrounders will arrive in Derbyshire looking to build on their encouraging start to the season having won two of their opening three matches, scoring six goals in that period.

Jack Bainbridge’s first-half strike secured all three points for Liam Watson’s side in their last encounter, a 1-0 victory on home soil over Darlington.

Somewhat of a confidence boosting statistic for the Reds ahead of Saturday’s clash is that Alfreton have lost just once to Southport in ten home outings, winning on five occasions and drawing the other four. That singular loss occurring in 2017.
