Alfreton Town return to the rigours of the league as they make the long journey south tomorrow night to face Bishops Stortford for the first time in their history on Tuesday night in the National League North.
There is a huge feel good factor reverberating around the club following Saturdays superb 2-0 win over Worthing in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup which saw Alfreton advance to the Second Round Proper for the first time since 2012 and for only the third time ever.
An absolute peach of a strike from all of 25 yards from defender Nathan Newall which will be remembered for years opened the scoring against Worthing before a late Kennedy Digie header, his third goal of the season sealed progression amid joyous scenes at the Impact Arena.
Alfreton have been rewarded for their excellent FA Cup run with the opportunity to take on a EFL side in the shape of League Two side Walsall looking for a maiden Football League scalp.
There is no rest for the Reds however as a punishing schedule for November continues with one of the longest away journeys of the season to the outskirts of Metropolitan London.
Bishop Stortford are one of the oldest non league clubs and celebrate their 150th anniversary next year, Despite their location "The Blues" who won the Isthmian League Premier League Division title last season are competing in the National League North for the second time in their history. Their first spell from 2011-13 took place while Alfreton were competing in the Conference Premier.
Stortford play at Woodside Park which ironically is extremely similar to the name of Worthing`s ground which is Woodside Park!
Having been given the pre season tag of relegation favourites Stortford have found it difficult to adjust to the National League North and lie in 22nd place. They are managed by Steve Smith who took over in 2019 and have enjoyed their better results on their own patch. Indeed 12 of their 13 league points have been gained at home thanks to wins over Chester,Boston,Darlington and last time out a 3-1 win over Derbyshire neighbours Buxton.
Billy Heath will be keen not to underestimate their opponents though given Alfreton`s troubles this season against the teams occupying the relegation places in the table.
Alfreton head into the clash in fifth place despite taking a break from the league for FA Cup Duties and know depending on results elsewhere a win could take them up to fourth in the league table ahead of the visit of Scarborough to the Impact on Saturday.
