FA Trophy Preview: Kings Lynn Town (H)

Reds prepare for National League Linnets in FA Trophy third round

Alfreton Town return to the Impact Arena once again tomorrow afternoon for our opening fixture in this season's FA Trophy as we face National League side Kings Lynn Town in the third round, kick off is 3pm behind closed doors.

Fixtures at the Impact Arena remain behind closed doors due to Derbyshire's placement into tier 3 following the two weekly review this week and as instructed by government guidelines and protocols. However we hope to welcome our supporters back to the Impact Arena and back on the road as soon as possible and as soon as government guidelines will allow to do so.

The Reds have progressed to the third round following Bedford's withdrawal from the competition after positive cases of Covid-19 this week.

We come up against last season's National League North champions who gained promotion to the National League after the division was decided via points per game in the summer. We faced the Linnets four times last season, twice in the NLN and twice in the FA Cup.

The fixture will be streamed once again live from ATFCTV from 2.30pm, we thank all of our previous guest co commentators for their contribution to the club. As always Amar Sharma will be joined on co-commentary by Nathan Evans.

Alfreton were denied three points in the 95th minute for the second game running in our last outing, as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Chorley at the Impact last Saturday. The Reds performed well and looked back to the stubbornness and toughness from the opening games of the season, we carried a threat throughout, with Luke Rawson giving us the lead on 22 after a scramble in the box saw a tap in for the on loan Chesterfield forward on his debut.

However despite defending well throughout the game and just when we were seconds away from the three points, Calveley went down in the box despite Danny Clarke winning the ball and his tackle looking more like a clearance. The penalty was given and Hall stepped up to convert to send the Magpies back home with a point.

Alfreton will be desperate to bounce back after another set back which saw us concede another equaliser to miss out on another two points. It's been a tough run of results and Saturday's penalty decision summed up the Reds fortunes in recent weeks.

We head into tomorrow's game against higher level opposition, seeking our first win in six games. Alfreton have registered just two wins from the 13 league games we have played so far.

We have won just once at the Impact Arena in the six games we have played so far. However we have only tasted defeat twice in those six games (Darlington 0-2, Brackley 0-2).

Visitors Kings Lynn have endured a difficult start to life in the National League and currently sit in 19th place with 14 points from 13 matches. They are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Their current playing record stands at: P14, W4, D2, L7.

The Linnets are also entering the FA Trophy at this stage and head into tomorrow's contest win-less in their last four games in all competitions (D1, L3). Their last outing saw Kings Lynn hold league leaders Torquay 0-0 last Saturday.

The visitors have won just one of their last four away games in all competitions (Barnet 0-2) including losing their last two at Hartlepool in the National League (2-0) and in the FA Cup second round at League One Portsmouth (6-1).

A FAMILIAR FOE: We faced the Linnets four times last season, twice in the league and two meetings in the FA Cup 2QR. Both games at the Impact ended in draws, 1-1 in the FA Cup and 2-2 in the NLN in December 2019, which was the last meeting between the sides.

The last FA Trophy outing for the Reds came in the 2019/20 season as we drew 1-1 at Croft Park in the 3QR. However the Spartans blew us away in the Replay with Callum Roberts, Dylan McGlade and Michael Sweet scoring in the opening 17 minutes. Amari Morgan-Smith’s sublime volley threatened a comeback soon after half-time but Blyth held on to progress.
