Reds prevail 4-3 on penalties over stubborn Tulips after magnificent equalizer from Whitehouse

Manager Billy Heath made 4 changes to the starting lineup from Saturday`s original tie ahead of Alfreton’s FA Cup 2nd round qualifying match against Spalding United on Tuesday night at the Impact arena with David Moyo most notably making a return to the team, alongside captain Wiley, Billy Whitehouse and Josh Clackstone

The game started fairly evenly, but Alfreton had a couple of openings early on. Fewster got past his full back and put a good ball in but no one was there to finish in a Reds shirt. The hosts kept possession well and showed their quality on the ball in the early stages.

Spalding United had a great chance to take the lead, they thought it was a goal as Cartwright directed a free header goalwards. George willis makes the save, but the visitors were convinced the ball had gone over the line, but the officials disagreed and the score remained goalless.

A corner for Alfreton after the 20th was headed away, by the ball was pinged back into the box and it was Hunt on the volley who fired just wide.

The Reds were beginning to look better as the half continued, with the hosts looking for the direct option and winning their aerial duels on most occasions. There was still no serious goal threat, however, with Spalding United defending diligently.

Long throws for the hosts were definitely a strong point in the first half, with numerous dangerous balls coming into the box through Adam Lund, but Spalding defended the area well and nullified the threat.

The half time whistle blew, with the game being even as the players went back down the tunnel.

The night was getting cooler as the second half began, and it restarted just like the first ended, evenly. That was until Alfreton had a flurry of chances, with Max Hunt firing a shot well wide of the target

The visitors made a double change just before the hour mark, in the hopes to freshen things up within their ranks. This seemed to provide Spalding with a new lease of life as they attacked the Alfreton back line.

The Reds chose to follow suit with a change of their own, as Whitehouse replaced Jed Abbey. Despite the change, it was still Fewster who was looking most dangerous for the home side. He earned his team a corner, which was headed just wide by Hunt.

A nice combination on the right between Whitehouse and Clackstone earned the hosts another corner, which again came to nothing. The following ball in was a good one, Hunt won the header and the shot was fired in. It appeared to hit a hand in the box but after some intense protests, it was waved away by the referee.

The visitors were well in their contest, with their left back Ngandu being the most lively player for the away side.

Four minutes were added on to the end of the game as both sides looked to steal a late winner, but the game went to extra time at the Impact Arena.

As extra time wore on, the away side began to assert their dominance more and more, which had the home crowd on edge as the game drew ever closer to penalties.

In the second period of extra time the visitors were put under some good pressure by Billy Heath`s men however a missed clearance at the back by Ofton left a golden chance for the away side, which they took clinically, as Bennett slot the ball past Willis to spark jubilant scenes for the visitors as they began to believe they pull of the upset

The game didn’t end there, however. It took a last minute equaliser from Whitehouse to break Spalding hearts. After Jake Day`s effort was cleared off the line Whitehouse picked up the ball on the edge of the box and curled a tremendous shot in to the top corner to rescue the Reds from defeat

Alfreton Town then won the resulting penalty shootout, The first such victory since a victory over Belper Town to win the Derbyshire Senior Cup in the final of the competition in the 2015/16 season
