Billy Heath and his management team have been working tirelessly in recent days and weeks to bolster his Ofton playing squad in his quest to turn around the fortunes of the Reds in the National League North this season
Alfreton Town are therefore excited to announce the capture of experienced defender Luke Matheson from EFL League One Side Bolton Wanderers.
Matheson has an eyebrow raising CV.
A product of the youth system at Rochdale, Matheson became the youngest ever player to play for the Dale first team making his debut at the tender age of just 15 and even earning the MOTM award.
Just a year later Matheson, 22, was scoring an equalising goal against Manchester United in the EFL Cup Third Round at Old Trafford, a tie Rochdale lost 5-3 on penalties.
His impressive performances for Dale earnt him a move to Premier League Side Wolverhampton Wanderers for a 1 million pound fee.
Unfortunately Matheson`s time was Wolves was adversely affected by serious injury. He enjoyed short loan spells at League One side Ipswich Town, Hamilton Academical of the Scottish Championship and Scunthorpe United in EFL League Two.
Following his release by Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of the 2022/23 season Matheson was signed by Bolton Wanderers and initially joined the Trotters B team.
After some good performances he and fellow B Team prospect Connor Carty were promoted to the First Team Squad in December 2023 on a deal that ran until 2025.
During his time at Bolton Matheson has also enjoyed a successful four month loan spell at League of Ireland side Bohemians from February to April 2024 where he made 10 appearances.
Moreover, Luke has represented England at Under 17 and Under 18 levels.
We are very excited to have Luke join the Reds squad
Welcome to the Impact Luke, we hope you enjoy your stay!
