Alfreton Town reaped the rewards of another Tuesday night triumph, coming from behind to beat Spennymoor 2-1 at the Impact Arena.

New signing Mark Beck orchestrated the late comeback, notching a goal and an assist on his first start for the club since arriving on a one-month loan from Scunthorpe.

With Alfreton looking to mirror the result from their last Tuesday night outing — a combative 1-0 victory at Chorley — it was set to be a similarly hard-fought affair facing play-off hopefuls Spennymoor. However, the opening 20 minutes lacked any real quality, epitomised by Tom Pugh’s dragged effort from a promising position.

The Moors had an avalanche of opportunities as half-time approached, as Pugh continued to terrorise Town’s defence. His ricocheted effort from the edge of the area looped up onto the bar before Harry Perrett blasted it away from the goal line — a heart-in-mouth moment for the hosts.

Amid the lashing autumnal downpour, the visitors found a flash of brilliance to forge ahead. Seasoned striker Glen Taylor stood tall over a free kick, and after being rolled into his path, he bent the ball around the Alfreton wall and beyond Burgoyne, finding the bottom corner with ease.

The soggy 397 in attendance witnessed the conditions come into play once more, as the Reds dug out their first chance of the second half. Nathan Newell’s free kick on 52 minutes got trapped in the fierce wind but fell kindly to substitute Lewis Salmon, who smashed his shot into the grateful grasp of Bobby Jones.

Following another spell of Spennymoor dominance, Town finally found their golden chance to equalise. A melee in the goalmouth presented the perfect opportunity for Beck to grab his debut goal, and the new loanee made no mistake in smashing home from close quarters — 1-1 with 10 minutes remaining.

Despite the absence of usual long-throw connoisseur Adam Lund, the Reds still looked to take advantage via George Cantrill’s expertise. His hurl into the area on 87 minutes was flicked on by Beck once again, finding the onrushing Billy Fewster, whose header nestled into the bottom left corner — sparking wild celebrations behind the goal. Alfreton left it late again but left with all three points.

Jake Buxton’s side return to action on Saturday, hoping to continue their good form at Gainsborough Trinity in the FA Vase for a 3pm kick-off.
