Alfreton Town return to league action tomorrow night under the Impact Arena lights, welcoming Spennymoor Town to Derbyshire for their game in hand in the Enterprise National League North.
After a turbulent start to the season, recent performances have shown promise. Following our first away win in nine months last Tuesday night against Chorley, which was secured by an early strike from Alfreton’s top scorer Billy Fewster, it was the Reds who were caught napping early on Saturday, as Luca Thomas ran unchallenged at the defence for AFC Fylde and fired past Harry Burgoyne with just three minutes played.
Alfreton didn’t let the early setback get to them as they stuck to their task commendably with a great attitude and work ethic against the high flying and much fancied opposition in AFC Fylde.
Ahead of kick-off, Alfreton unveiled the loan signing of Mark Beck from National League side Scunthorpe United. Beck, 31 is extremely experienced playing for a plethora of clubs across Northern England including Carlisle United, Workington, Wrexham, Darlington, Harrogate, York, Solihull and most recently Scunthorpe. Beck enjoyed his best time of his career between 2016 and 2022 when he had two excellent spells at Darlington either side of a 4 years stint at Harrogate Town.
And when Beck was introduced as a substitute in the second half against the Coasters on Saturday, Alfreton did excellently to put Fylde under some intense pressure in the later stages of the contest.
Despite the obvious improvements on the pitch following other results elsewhere across the league Jake Buxton’s side slipped to 23rd in the league standings.
Buxton is still searching for his first home win at the helm and will be eager to register it here as a win will take Alfreton out of the bottom four for the first time in several weeks regardless of other results.
Spennymoor need no introduction, with the Reds and Moors having met no fewer than four times last season. Alfreton came out on top in the FA Cup, while Spennymoor advanced in the FA Trophy and also got the better of the Reds in both league encounters.
Graeme Lee’s side head into the game on the back of a 1-0 home win over Peterborough Sports, secured by a Glenn Taylor penalty. They currently sit sixth in the table with 27 points from 15 games and recently reached the First Round of the FA Cup for the first time in several years, where they fell 2-0 at home to Barrow.
It’s another crucial game for the lads and Jake Buxton so make sure you are at the Impact to cheer on Jake and the Reds as we look for three huge points!
