Fresh off the back of their first win in five—earned in midweek away at Chorley—Alfreton Town begin a run of two home games in four days when they welcome promotion-chasing AFC Fylde to Derbyshire on Saturday afternoon in the National League North. The Reds carried the positive momentum of last weekend’s last-gasp equaliser against Kidderminster Harriers into their visit to Victory Park. They took advantage of hesitant defending from the hosts to score after just 85 seconds, thanks to Billy Fewster’s third goal of the season.
Following excellent work down the wing from Siya Ligendza and a clever layoff, Fewster found the corner well to become the club’s top scorer on three goals—making it two goals in two minutes of playing time for Jake Buxton’s men. It was Buxton’s first win at the helm and a performance full of grit, solidity, and hard graft—qualities synonymous with former manager Billy Heath—which will have pleased the new boss. The result was timely, with three of the bottom four winning on Tuesday night. Alfreton rose to 21st in the league table and, after a string of positive results, head into one of their toughest tests of the season with the pressure eased somewhat. The difficulty shows no signs of easing, however, with the visit of promotion heavyweights AFC Fylde to the Impact Arena.
After two seasons away in the National Division, the Coasters were relegated back to the National League North at the end of the 2024/25 season following a disappointing campaign that saw them finish 23rd. In the summer, they appointed Craig Mahon from Curzon Ashton and packed their squad with talent as they target an immediate return to non-league’s top tier.
Mahon’s side have made an excellent start to the season and head into this weekend’s match looking for an eighth straight away win in the Enterprise National League North. Their hopes of automatic promotion were dented on Wednesday night, however, when they lost 4–2 at home to South Shields in a top-of-the-table clash. In a superb contest full of endeavour and quality—and a great advert for the league—it was the North East side who emerged victorious and went top with two games in hand.
It is over nine years since Alfreton last got the better of AFC Fylde, thanks to Tom Allan’s early goal in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round in 2016. The Reds have never beaten the Coasters at home but did claim an away win at Kellamergh Park in February 2016, courtesy of Dan Bradley—who would later go on to have two spells at Fylde.
