Match Preview: Alfreton Town v Scunthorpe United

Liam Henton15 Jul - 09:27

Reds to host Iron tonight in latest pre season clash!

Scunthorpe United and Alfreton Town have shared plenty of thrilling league encounters in recent seasons, and they'll meet again tomorrow at the Impact Arena in the Reds’ latest pre-season fixture as preparations continue for the upcoming Enterprise Rent-A-Car National League North campaign.

In the sweltering heat last Saturday afternoon, Alfreton rolled up their sleeves and battled admirably against EFL League One side Burton Albion. Gary Bowyer’s Brewers were very impressive - arguably the best side Billy Heath’s men have faced so far. Their expansive and accurate, possession-based game made the task a difficult one for the Reds, but Ofton battled gamely and with real vigour.

Charlie Webster struck just after the half hour to give the Brewers the lead with what turned out to be the only goal of the game. Alfreton posed more of a threat after the interval but could not find a way through a stubborn and well marshalled visiting defence.

While there were plenty of positives to take from the performance, there were also a few injury setbacks. George Cantrill will miss the next couple of weeks with a knock, and David Solademi is also set for a short spell on the sidelines. Lewis Salmon, who made his first appearance of pre-season against Burton last Saturday, continues to be assessed as he manages an ongoing injury.

Scunthorpe will provide a test more in line with the rigours of the upcoming league season tomorrow night, with the Iron having just secured promotion to the National League after two seasons at Step 2, following a dramatic play-off final win over Chester.
